Transport and Accommodation WSAN 2014

The colloquium will take place at the Berrick Saul Building on the University of York’s Heslington West campus. A map of campus can be found here: http://www.york.ac.uk/about/maps/.

Directions to the University

By Bus

Buses number 4 and 44 serve the university from the railway station and the city centre at frequent intervals (around every 10 minutes). Both buses operate up to near midnight. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the campus from the station. A day return ticket costs £2 and a single around £1.50.

The closest bus stop to the Berrick Saul Building is the J.B. Morrell Library stop.

By Taxi

A taxi from the railway station will take approximately 15 minutes. The station’s taxi rank is just outside the main entrance. From the University, the numbers for preferred taxi services are: Ebor Taxis  01904 641441, Getaway Taxis  01904 622228, or Fleetways Taxis  01904 645333.

By Car

It is best to approach the University from the junction of the A64 and A1079 on the east of the city, from where the University is signposted. For Satnav navigation, the University postcode is YO10 5DD.

On the day of the colloquium (Saturday), parking at the University’s pay and display car parks are free. Please note that permit-only car parks are still reserved for permit holders during these times.

Accommodation

Travelodge has reasonably priced rooms on offer. There are two branches in York: Micklegate and Central. The Micklegate branch is close to the station and bus stops for the University, but it is about a 30-40 minutes’ walk away. The Central branch is about 20 minutes’ walk away and is on the edge of the city centre.

Hotel 53 has good reputation and is close to bus stops and the city centre. It is about 25 minutes’ walk away from campus.

Other B&Bs in convenient areas are:

Midway HouseFriars Rest Guest HouseMoorgarth Guesthouse on Fulford road are all a 20-minute walk away from the University with reasonable rates starting from £30.

The Four Poster Lodge is only 15 minutes’ walk from the University, traditional British B&B with en-suite rooms from £45.

The Fort York is a popular boutique hostel in the city centre with good reviews at £36.

For cheaper alternatives, Ace Hostel has dormitory rooms from £16 and is near the train station.

There are also many rooms available on Airbnb in central locations.
